ZA'ATAR POPCORN (VEGAN)

Za'atar popcorn is the perfect salty and savory snack. It can be as easy as tossing your microwaved popcorn with za'atar, or following the recipe below for oil-popped popcorn over the stovetop. Nutritional yeast adds a cheesy, umami note. Adjust the seasonings to your personal tastes.

 

Ingredients

2 tablespoons light olive oil

1/3 cup popcorn kernals

2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (optional)

1 teaspoon fine sea salt

2 teaspoon za'atar

 

Method

Combine the oil and 1/2 of the popcorn kernels in a heavy saucepan (at least 3 quarts) and heat over high heat. Cover and heat until the kernels pop, 2-3 minutes. In the meantime, place a large serving bowl near the stove so that it's ready when you need it.

Add the remaining popcorn kernels, cover, and cook, shaking the saucepan until the kernels start to pop. Open the lid slightly to release steam and keep popping until you hear no more kernels popping. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning and transfer to a large bowl. Add the nutritional yeast, sugar, salt, and za'atar and toss.
